Carburettor maintenance

Often overlooked until they don’t run right but regular maintenance cleaning and servicing is key to a well performing carburettor.

Once calibrated and adjusted correctly carburettors rarely go out of tune despite some popular opinions usually there is an underlying problem or lack of maintenance.

With modern fuel blends and ethanol additives we recommend you have your carburettors serviced every 12-18 months.

These modern fuels corrosive by nature have an adverse effect on rubber seals gaskets and other components.

Carburettors may look clean on the outside but contaminates dirt debris and rust from old fuel tanks can all build up internally.

Modern fuels only have a shelf life of around 3 months and start to discolour and break down forming gel like deposited that can block and restrict a carburettor.

We recommend the float bowls are drained during long storage periods and over the winter when the vehicle is not in use.

To maintain the outside we recommend a product like ACF/50 to protect the carburettor externally from oxidation.

If you think your carburettors need servicing then contact our approved service centre via the contact form.

Both our comprehensive and the standard service kits are available via our shop.

Simple checks to improve the serviceability of your carburettors

  • Regularly check fuel lines and fit ethanol proof lines that cope with modern fuels.
  • Inspect fuel filters for debris and signs of aging fuel.
  • Check your throttle cable and linkage condition for operation sticking and routing.
  • Worn out linkages cause all kinds of issues.
  • Ensure there are no signs of leaks usually detected by staining on the carburettor body.
  • Try and keep carburettors free from damp and water that can cause oxidation both internally and externally a real carb killer.
